The Fremont High School girls basketball team advanced to the DICK’S Sporting Goods High School National Tournament championship game with a 43-33 victory over Miami Senior High School (Florida) at Christ the King High School in New York City Friday.
Fremont, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, will face Riverdale Baptist (Maryland), the tournament’s top seed tomorrow at 8 a.m. MST at Madison Square Garden. The game will be televised on ESPN2. Riverdale Baptist advanced after overcoming a 19-point deficit to defeat Edgewater High School (Florida) 59-58.
Fremont, the Utah High School Activities Association’s 5-A state champion, stifled Miami the entire afternoon – holding the Stingarees to just eight points in the first half. Fremont led by as many as 14 in the second.
Fremont led 18-8 at halftime, but Miami clawed its way back to within six during the third quarter. A late Fremont surge gave the Silver Wolves a 33-19 lead at the end of the third.
Miami never got closer than nine in the fourth quarter.
